Computers and operating systems did not come with any web browsers at the time. Some systems didn’t even come with TCP/IP, you had to get one separately on floppy. To give a perspective, I am talking about the era of Windows 95 and Mac OS 7. Microsoft preinstalled IE with Windows 95 OSR1, and since OSR2 and IE3 market share climbed. It was a brilliant marketing move to force their browser on their users, but also an abuse of power, as judge Jackson later ruled in the antitrust case.
